The Mosel Valley and around

We had a quick look at Bad Münstereifel in the morning as it was just down the road, pretty old buildings and a bit touristy with cafes and restaurants all around, but our next heading was the Mosel Valley.
To get there we went via the Nürburgring, so of course we stopped for a while and watched as fast cars whizzed past. It had just rained so it was a wet track and while some drivers were a bit cautious, others drove like they were Ayrton Senna!

We made our way to a little place called Burgen and stayed at a proper site for the first time. Hot showers much needed.

The next day, we visited a castle that was on the to do list, Eltz Castle.
Very impressive and up there with it’s more famous counterpart Neuschwanstein as the prettiest in Germany. This medieval castle, which has nearly 1000 years of history on the site, has never suffered severe damage—or had to be rebuilt by romanticists of the 1800s—unlike most castles in the area which were destroyed by Louis XIVs rampages into the area back in the late 1600s.
There was some exquisite details inside but sadly we couldn’t take photos.

From there we drove slowly down the Mosel valley, going through some quiet villages and some busier and more touristy towns such as Cochem. It’s a very serpentine road that follows the river closely, and in the hills all around, vineyards planted at impossible angles as far as the eye can see.
A very popular place with motorhomes, there were endless amounts of places to stay along the river, needless to say, we chose a free spot.

The next day, we continued our drive down the valley, stopping at Bernkastel-Keus to see some wonky houses, another very touristy spot (in fairness most are, down this valley), before making our way down to Trier for our night stopover.

That night was rather chilly, the coldest so far, it was about 10c in the van when we woke up in the morning, normally it’s more like 16c which is fine. It’s bloody May, what’s going on!

Anyway, moan, moan, it soon warmed up, and walking around Trier, the jumpers had to come off so it wasn’t all bad.
Trier, is a very clean town, very pedestrian friendly with lots of places to stop off and grab a bite, giant pretzels, bratwurst in a bun and the like. It is famous for it’s Roman sites amongst other things. Another easy place to walk around and just enjoy.

One more wild camping spot on top the valley looking down towards the Mosel river, then were leaving Germany for a little while, and making our way into France for a few days. Heading to a proper campsite near Metz.
